Component Information Form

Component Name

Enter a few words naming the emerging technology component you are proposing to identify for indexing on the ET.gov site. This field is mandatory. A component may or may not already exist. You may either be offering it or expressing the desire to join with others to develop it.

Component Description

Enter a brief description of the emerging technology component you are proposing. This field is mandatory. The description should clearly and concisely define the proposed component. Along with the Component Name, the text you enter in this field will be indexed and available for full-text searching on the ET.gov site.

Benefits to the Government

This field is mandatory. It will not be indexed on the ET.gov site, but if you fail to provide at least a brief description of the potential benefits, the name and description of your proposed emerging technology component will not be indexed. This field should be used to describe how your proposed component will add value, improve business efficiency and/or effectiveness, or provides new functionality of interest to the Government.

In addition to text, your entry in this field may include hyperlinks to more in-depth information, including graphics and marketing materials. Please do not include marketing information directly in this field. In the interest of maintaining the integrity and reputation of the ET.gov site, we reserve the right to remove from the ET.gov site any links that may subject our stakeholders to promotional materials that favor style or hype over substance.

Component Type

Click on the appropriate value to indicate whether your proposed component is hardware, software, or data.

Selection of one and only one of those values is mandatory in order to enable selective browsing and searching of the ET.gov site by Component Type. Since hardware, software and data components are logically separable from each other, an ET component may not be comprised of more than one Component Type.

Service Type

Use of this field is optional. If you choose to use it, select the category that most closely describes the service performed by your proposed component. You may select one and only one category. If the proposed ET component falls into more than one category, logically speaking, it comprises more than one component and should be broken down accordingly. However, if your proposed ET component does not fit neatly into one of the existing categories, you may propose a new category, by selecting the value “Propose Service Type” and entering a name for the proposed service category in the adjacent field. (See Figure 1)

In the context of the ET.gov site and process, the primary purpose of the controlled vocabulary set forth in the Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA) Service Component Reference Model (SRM) is to facilitate discovery of software service components. The SRM is organized as a functional hierarchy, with Service Domains at the highest level, followed by Service Types and Components. Service Types further categorize and define the capabilities of a Service Domain.
Until such time as the FEA Data Reference Model (DRM) is available for referencing, it may be worthwhile to classify some ET components of the data Component Type under the SRM, particularly if those components are Web Services. (In the context of the ET.gov site/process, Web Services are considered to be Web sites that transmit valid XML instance documents upon request.)

For more information on the SRM, see http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/egov/a-4-srm.html

Technical Standard

Use of this field is optional. If you choose to use it, select from the controlled vocabulary in the list box "Service Area" the "Service Area"  to which your proposed ET component conforms. Selecting a "Service Area" will populate the next list box with the appropriate "Service Category" options. After selecting the appropriate "Service Category", select a "Technical Standard" from the appropriate list box. This will populate the "Service Specification" box with a list of possible choices. Select the appropriate "Service Specification" and click "Add Item". Repeat this process as necessary and select all of the technical specifications that apply. Categorizing your proposed component under the controlled vocabulary provided in the TRM will enable ET.gov site users to discover your proposed component based upon the technical specifications it supports.

If your proposed component is itself a technical specification or if it conforms to a technical specification not currently contained in the FEA TRM, please select “Propose Technical Specification” from the "Service Specification" list box and name the specification in the adjacent field. (See Figure 2)
