Use of this field is optional. If you choose to use it,
select the category that most closely describes the service
performed by your proposed component. You may select one
and only one category. If the proposed ET component falls
into more than one category, logically speaking, it comprises
more than one component and should be broken down accordingly.
However, if your proposed ET component does not fit neatly
into one of the existing categories, you may propose a new
category, by selecting the value “Propose Service Type” and
entering a name for the proposed service category in the
adjacent field. (See Figure 1)
In the context of the ET.gov site and process, the primary purpose of
the controlled vocabulary set forth in the Federal Enterprise Architecture
(FEA) Service Component Reference Model (SRM) is to facilitate discovery
of software service components. The SRM is organized as a functional
hierarchy, with Service Domains at the highest level, followed by Service
Types and Components. Service Types further categorize and define the
capabilities of a Service Domain.
Until such time as the FEA Data Reference Model (DRM) is available for
referencing, it may be worthwhile to classify some ET components of the
data Component Type under the SRM, particularly if those components are
Web Services. (In the context of the ET.gov site/process, Web Services
are considered to be Web sites that transmit valid XML instance documents
upon request.)
For more information on the SRM, see http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/egov/a-4-srm.html
